FAQs for existing clients

How will I be able to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency?

You will receive an information pack from your current disability support provider. This will contain a consent form which will ask your permission for the NDIA to contact you about having eligibility and support needs considered by NDIA. You will need to complete the form and mail it to NDIA or give it to your provider.

When we receive your consent form we will ring you in the month before you are scheduled to come into the Scheme. We will ask you to complete the Access Request Form and to provide information we need to confirm your eligibility to participate in the scheme. We will also ask for some information so that we can confirm who you are (like a birth certificate) – and where you live.

Finally, we will ask you about information you have on your support needs relating to your disability. This might include any current assessment you might have about your support needs, or your current Individualised Support Package plan.

You can then choose to give all of this information directly to us or ask us to collect it from other people so that we have the information available before we meet with you.

What will happen to my current supports before I am scheduled to access NDIA?

Your current supports will continue in accordance with the arrangements you currently have.

Do I have to change my current support arrangements once I come across to NDIA?

No – not if you are happy with these and they are consistent with the legislation that the NDIA must operate within.

Under the legislation, NDIA can only fund supports that are reasonable and necessary and this means that they must:

  1. assist you to pursue your goals objectives and aspirations, and;
  2. assist you to undertake activities and to increase your social and economic participation, and;
  3. represent value for money, and;
  4. be, or likely to be, effective and beneficial and;
  5. take into account what it is reasonable to expect families, carers, informal networks and the community to provide;
  6. not be used to fund supports that are most appropriately funded or provided through other general systems of service delivery or support services offered by a person, agency or body, or other systems of service delivery or support services
  7. not be illegal or designed to replace your income.

Where your current supports are consistent with what NDIA is able to fund, you can choose to keep your current arrangements and we will simply make these your NDIA-funded supports under your plan.

You will just need to give us information about these arrangements, or ask us to collect it from other people, and we will load these into our system. We will then organise to meet with you to give you a copy of your plan and discuss when we will next contact you.

This is the streamlined process that has been established to ensure existing clients who are happy with their current arrangements can keep all these arrangements in place.

Can I look at changing my supports if I am not happy with what I’m currently receiving?

Yes, you can. We understand that some people will want to revisit their personal goals and make sure their supports better enable them to achieve these goals. You can do this through the planning and assessment conversation with the Agency.

Will the planning conversation require me to spend a long time with the Agency?

Each conversation will be tailored to meet the needs of each individual. If you have some goals that you would like to achieve but your current supports are not adequate to help you to do this, we can just focus on what we might be able to do to support you with these goals.

If you want to have a more detailed conversation about, for example, how to make all your supports work better for you, or look at accessing different supports than you do now, then we can do that as well.

There is no set time limit for the planning conversation. It will depend on your needs, how much adjustment might be necessary to your current supports, and the availability of other information that the planner might have.

What happens if I am an existing client but am not eligible for support from NDIA?

If you don’t meet these requirements, governments have agreed that you will not be disadvantaged in the transition to the new arrangements and will be able to access the same level of supports you already have. We are currently finalising arrangements with the state government on how these arrangements will be put in place.

  1. There is consent to contact, then
  2. Phone call to explain access request form, then
  3. The first face to face discussion which might include access request form including supporting material, proof of identity provided for eligibility determination, discussion on preferred next steps, then
  4. Determine eligibility
  5. Find out if participant wants to continue current supports?
  6. If they do not want to continue their current supports and they are eligible, the person will have a second face to face discussion that includes determining the participant statement and light touch planning and assessment conversation. The person will then have a third face to face discussion to finalise their plan, or
  7. Find out if participant wants to continue current supports?
  8. If yes and their goals and support are adequate, then they have second face to face discussion and finalise their plan
